Calling Black British Writers
October 2020
Here at Talawa Theatre Company we had planned how to support the theatre industry to build back better.
We built partnerships, engaged with Black artists, supported emerging directors and freelance creatives, and planned our own programme of exciting new work.
We then called out to Black British writers
Talawa Theatre Company and feral inc secured more than 80 thirty-page scripts from Black British Writers for a Radio 4 commission.
- We only considered full scripts, not treatments.
- Pilots (with a self-contained story), short film and theatre scripts were all welcome.
- Any writers who got commissioned received the appropriate WGGB fee.
- We looked for first-time radio writers.
Deadline: Sunday the 1st of November 2020. We informed shortlisted candidates by the 9th of November.
Talawa's history of nurturing and collaborating with outstanding writers like Roy Williams, Derek Walcott, Jackie Kay, Arinze Kene, Chinonyerem Odimba, Inua Ellams, and Malorie Blackman is well known.
Now, Talawa is developing the next generation of Black British writers such as Nicôle Lecky, Somalia Seaton, Theresa Ikoko, Natasha Marshall and Archie Maddocks.
