Yvonne Brewster OBE: 1938 - 2025

We're incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of the incomparable founder of Talawa, Yvonne Brewster.

A pioneer of the stage, Yvonne was a visionary leader and trailblazer for so many of us who have forged successful careers in the Black British arts scene. Her contribution to British and international theatre could be considered unmatched.

She was the first Artistic Director of Talawa and one of the four female founders of the company.

Michael Buffong, Artistic Director, says:

"Yvonne was instrumental in shaping my career and that of many others. I wouldn’t have had the opportunities I’ve had if it wasn’t for her. I will greatly miss her presence and wisdom. Her spirit will always be here at Talawa."
