One building in Brixton tells the story of London’s changing communities over three very different generations.
As their city moves on without them, Trinidadian funeral director Clarence and fifth generation pub owner George don’t want things to change. But everything around them is changing. Do they adapt to survive? Or stay true to their roots and risk it all... family, tradition, business?
In the wake of the Windrush scandal, this is a play about shifting communities, the traditions we choose to fight for and the ones we have to leave behind. In one moment laugh-out-loud funny and the next deeply moving, it looks at where we live, how we live and the people who struggle to live in the place they call home.
From the razor-sharp mind of playwright and stand-up comedian Archie Maddocks, A Place for We has been described as "The funniest play of the year" ★★★★★ Theatre Weekly and "Full of subtlety and naturalism" ★★★★ The Guardian.
A Place for We was shortlisted in 2017 for both the Bruntwood Prize and Alfred Fagon Award, it was first performed as a staged reading at Talawa Firsts 2018 and is directed by Talawa’s Artistic Director Michael Buffong.
This production has also won the OffWestEnd Award for Best Performance Ensemble and has been nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre.
Michael Buffong, Director of A Place For We and Artistic Director and Joint CEO of Talawa Theatre Company
"In Talawa’s 35-year history we’ve been at the forefront of presenting the issues faced by our communities. More than ever, gentrification is the pressing issue of our day, in Finsbury Park and across Britain’s cities. Archie’s play, A Place for We, grabbed us when we first read it in 2017. We programmed it in our new writing season Talawa Firsts in 2018, and the response confirmed our instincts; here was a special story from a special storyteller. We are so very pleased to present the full production to this audience at Park Theatre."
