Elvira is African. Rohan is Indian.
They are both Trinidadian.
They live in London but are stranded on the holiday island of Tobago during the 1990 coup in neighbouring Trinidad. Coups & Calypsos is the uncompromising story of their love at risk from civil unrest, from local prejudice, but most of all from the racism which their marriage encounters no matter where they are.
