Now in its 13th year, Talawa's annual young people's theatre programme evolved out of a demand for culturally specific training for young Black and Asian performers. It gives Londoners, between the ages of 18 and 25, an opportunity to enter the world of professional theatre and hone the skills that will be expected of them in the industry. Participants create a text based piece of theatre under the guidance of professional practitioners and perform to paying audiences in professional London venues. The TYPT programme is also addressing the lack of Black representation in theatre production by offering participatory off-stage roles and has successfully contributed towards the personal development of many of the young people who take part.
