'At Talawa I knew I would receive the support I needed as a writer rather than the generic help/support other courses provide.'
Angela Turvey - Writers' Group participant 2007
Talawa Writers Group is aimed at experienced playwrights passionate about writing Black British drama. The Group, now in its third year, provides a superb opportunity for 8-10 emerging and established writers to expand their skills, network with key industry leaders and present their work in a showcase of play readings in Spring 2008.
The programme lasts a year and offers targeted advanced writing lectures, excellent networking opportunities with institutions such as Royal Court Theatre, Soho Theatre, The Royal National Theatre, BBC, Channel 4 and others, and a series of West End and other theatre visits through which writers can note, experience and engage with large scale theatre movements and events. Writers meet on 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month for two hours.
The current group commenced on 2nd May 2007 and ends in March 2008. It is dedicated to creating an ongoing dramaturgical camaraderie among writers. Our writers group has fast become an industry resource to provide writers to users such as the BBC, ITV and others.
We shall be considering applications for the next group in February 2008. To qualify applicants should have had at least one theatre, film or radio play produced and reviewed in the national press.
