Chair of Trustees
Become our Chair of Trustees
Talawa was founded in 1986 by Yvonne Brewster, Carmen Munroe, Mona Hammond and Inigo Espejel, in response to the lack of creative opportunities for Black actors and the marginalisation of Black peoples from cultural processes.
Today, Talawa is the primary Black theatre company in the UK, with more than 50 touring productions from African classics to Oscar Wilde behind it.
Talawa has recently moved to Fairfield Halls in Croydon with new offices and a 200-seat studio space which will operate as a central hub for Black British artists, enabling Talawa to develop a community outreach programme, develop new work, and create and premiere new Black theatre on both the small and the mid-scale. There will be significant opportunities and challenges in the years ahead for the company and it is in that context that Talawa are seeking exceptional candidates for the role of Chair of Trustees.
The Chair will play a key role in the development of Talawa’s future strategy and serve as a proactive and compelling ambassador and advocate for the Company in these next exciting years. Candidates should bring a passion for, and knowledge of, the UK’s theatre and wider arts scene. They will ideally have experience of working at board level, be well networked and have the experience required to play a central role in fundraising for the organisation.
